Robot can learn language from people

Robot can develop the foundation skills of the language through interaction with people, according to new research from the University of Hertfordshire (UK) in the journal PLoS ONE.

The British researchers, including Dr. Caroline Lyon, Chrystopher Nehaniv and Professor Dr. Joe Saunders have just completed a new experiment iTalk project, made with human-like robot iCub.
The purpose of this project is to understand how language learning takes place. At first, the robot can only babbles without a sound, then present the statement as a string sound out words clutter.
But after a few minutes "exchange" by talking with iCub as for a child, the robot began to adjust the language and emit some form complete words, like words shape and color.
Dr. Caroline Lyon said: "We all know that children are sensitive to sound frequencies in the dialogue, and experiments show this sensitivity can be imitated and contribute to the training for the robot's ability to speak."
Participants in the project were taught iTalk robot learn to speak by the same method applied in teaching children, and the central part of that process is the interaction between humans and robots.
Although iCub learns to talk, but it still do not understand the meaning of each word. And that's the next goal of the project iTalk. |
