"Ba" in Bahnar language means "rice", while Cham is from the Cham ethnic group, like Cham rice. The village elders in Dak Troi commune, Mang Yang district cannot determine the origin of the Ba Cham rice variety, only know that people here have eaten Ba Cham rice for a long time and until now they only eat this one type of rice.
There is also another tradition about this rice variety that in the 1960s, the Chams in Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, when participating in revolutionary activities during the anti-French era, brought this rice variety to Mang Yang district to cultivate and preserve to this day.
Ba Cham Mang Yang rice grain is oblong, its belly is slightly round, milky white and has a characteristic aroma.
The Cham rice growing area in Mang Yang district is low-lying fields distributed at an altitude of 700m - 1,000m above sea level, temperature amplitude day and night in the months when the rice is blossoming and gets grain (September - October) is 9-10 degrees Celsius, the air humidity is over 80% during the growing season (April to November). This feature of topography and climate together with the long cultivation season (Cham rice variety is long-term dry rice variety) has created favorable conditions for rice grown in Mang Yang district to have time to accumulate nutrients and rice seeds is milky color and a characteristic aroma.
Ba Cham Mang Yang rice is currently cultivated mainly in the fields of Dak Troi commune, De Ar commune, Kon Chieng commune, Kon Thup commune, Lo Pang commune, Mang Yang district, Gia Lai province.
The National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam on November 23, 2020 issued Decision No. 4524 / QD-SHTT on the granting of the Certificate of Geographical Indication Registration No. 00093 for "Mang Yang" Ba Cham rice products. According to the decision, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province is the organization that manages this geographical indication. |
