New generation solar cells thinner than a hair

In research published in the journal Small Methods in December 2022, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new technique for making ultra-thin, flexible solar cells active, durable and lightweight.

It weighs only 1/100 the weight of conventional solar cells but is capable of producing about 18 times more energy per kilogram.
To manufacture the solar cells, the team uses nanomaterials in the form of printable e-inks. They coated layers of electronic material onto a substrate made of Dyneema synthetic fabric just a few micrometers (μm) thick.
During testing, the team found that their solar cells have a power output of 370–730W per kilogram.
Because the next-generation solar panels are much thinner than a human hair, they can be laminated to many different surfaces. For example, they can be integrated into the sail of a boat to provide power while at sea, attached to the wings of a drone to extend range, or attached to tents and tarps. used in disaster recovery operations. |
