Developing the Mekong Delta to adapt to climate change
On September 24, in Can Tho, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the World Bank held a workshop on "Integrated climate resilience and sustainable development in the Mekong Delta."

Attending the workshop, there were Mr. Le Minh Hoan, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Mrs. Carolyn Turk, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, international organizations and leaders of provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta.

At the workshop, participants discussed key interventions in the integrated framework and coordination mechanism to help the Mekong Delta increase its resilience to climate change. The focus is on overcoming difficulties and limitations in agricultural production associated with the central role of farmers in transforming agricultural production to adapt to abnormal weather conditions.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan affirmed: The Mekong Delta needs to shift to a more active state and approach in transforming agricultural production to adapt to climate change. This is a common issue of the whole delta, not a separate matter of each province in the region.

On the basis of the integrated regional planning approved by the Government, the agricultural sector and localities need to transform agricultural production towards sustainability, increase the proportion in fisheries and fruit crops, and reduce rice production while ensuring food security and farmers' income.

The World Bank has implemented many projects to support the development of the Mekong Delta to adapt to climate change, said Carolyn Turk, Director of the World Bank in Vietnam. In which, it focuses on supporting the construction of transport and irrigation infrastructure, planting mangroves along the coast in association with creating livelihoods for people.

The World Bank has supported upgrading 470 km of embankment and building 192 sluices of all kinds to ensure stable production in the context of climate change, protect 27 km of coastline, and review and upgrade belts of coastal mangrove forest with a total length of 50 km.
