The unique qualities of the Van Chan turtle spine above-mentioned due to the natural geographical conditions and traditional farming practices. Van Chan is a mountainous district of Yen Bai province, where there is a dense system of rivers and streams, in which there are two large streams namely Pha stream and Lao stream made up of small streams, such as Stream Ngoi Nhi, Nam Tang stream, Nam Muoi stream, Nam Dong stream, Hop Thanh stream.

The characteristic of firm meat, low fat of Van Chan's turtle spine is also due to the custom of feeding turtle spine. If other localities use industrial bran and by-products of the slaughterhouse as food for turtles in Van Chan, households feed mainly worms, fish, snails, mussels, so turtle grows more slowly, the meat is low in fat and firm, the meat is crispy. When the meat is simmered for a long time, the meat is soft, and it will not be eaten.
